GEORGE EDWARD HOCKIN

b 29.4.1874 Clifton d JFM 1936 Paddington WH Career: 59,2

Formerly with St Gabriel's, for whom he scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Eastville Alliance on The Downs in November 1890, George Hockin became a stalwart of Rovers’ side between 1892 and 1897, scoring once in 23 Birmingham and District League matches. He also scored a last-minute goal on a hot, humid day in September 1895, after a poor clearance by the opposition goalkeeper, as Rovers won an astonishing Western League game 7-3 at Trowbridge Town, and in a friendly against Hereford Thistle in October 1896. The youngest of four sons and three daughters to William Richard Hockin (1842-1906), a commercial traveler born in Wadebridge, Cornwall, and his wife Selina Emma Sprod (1832-1890), he was born at 2 Craddock Buildings, Ducie Road, St George and brought up at 24 Digby Street. George Hockin married Blanche Jones in 1926 and they had a son, Jack, and daughters, Kathleen and Eileen; he died at the age of sixty-one.
